The Society of Hospital Medicine is proud to announce the inaugural National Hospitalist Day, to be held on Thursday, March 7, 2019. Occurring the first Thursday in March annually, National Hospitalist Day will serve to celebrate the fastest-growing specialty in modern medicine and hospitalists’ enduring contributions to the evolving health care landscape.

National Hospitalist Day was recently approved by the National Day Calendar and was one of approximately 30 national days to be approved for the year out of an applicant pool of more than 18,000.

“As the only society dedicated to the specialty of hospital medicine, it is appropriate that SHM spearhead a national day to recognize the countless contributions of hospitalists to health care, from clinical, academic, and leadership perspectives and more,” said Larry Wellikson, MD, MHM, chief executive officer of SHM. “We look forward to hospitalists across the nation contributing to the festivities and making this a tradition for years to come.”

In addition to celebrating hospitalists’ contributions to patient care, SHM will also be highlighting the diverse career paths of hospital medicine professionals, from frontline hospitalist physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to practice administrators, C-suite executives, and academic hospitalists.

Highlights of SHM’s campaign include the following:

• Downloadable customizable posters and assets for hospitals and individuals’ offices to celebrate their hospital medicine team, available on SHM’s website, hospitalmedicine.org.
• A series of spotlights of hospitalists at all stages of their careers in The Hospitalist, SHM’s monthly newsmagazine.

SHM members have access to free continuing medical education (CME) and Maintenance of Certification (MOC) points with the SHM Learning Portal. Don’t miss two new modules: Role of the Medical Consultant and Anesthesia for Internists.

Medical consultation is an important clinical component for most hospitalists. Today, hospitalists also are asked to provide both “curbside” advice and more comprehensive comanagement of medical problems. Hospitalists who are effective consultants communicate skillfully and act professionally. The Role of the Medical Consultant module describes the different roles that hospitalists can perform as medical consultants and provides strategies for improving communications and referring physician satisfaction.

In 2017, SHM re-surveyed members to understand the state of hospital observation care after several legislative and regulatory changes. Through this new survey, hospitalists reported on their experience with the two-midnight rule and the impact of the recent Notification of Observation Treatment and Implication of Care Eligibility (NOTICE) Act, which requires hospitals to inform patients through the Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON) form that they are hospitalized under observation. New guide & modules on multimodal pain strategies for postoperative pain management

Pain management can pose multiple challenges in the acute care setting for hospitalists and front-line prescribers. While their first priority is to optimally manage pain in their patients, they also face the challenges of treating diverse patient populations, managing patient expectations, and considering how pain control and perceptions affect Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems scores. Furthermore, because of the ongoing opioid epidemic, prescribers must ensure that pain is managed responsibly and ethically.

To address these issues, SHM developed a guide to address how to work in an interdisciplinary team, identify impediments to implementation, and provide examples of appropriate pain management. In accompaniment with this Multimodal Pain Strategies Guide for Postoperative Pain Management, there are three modules presented by the authors which supplement the electronic guide.

Choosing Wisely Case Study compendium now available

The Choosing Wisely Case Study Competition, hosted by SHM, sought submissions from hospitalists on innovative improvement initiatives implemented in their respective institutions. These initiatives reflect and promote movement toward reducing unnecessary medical tests and procedures and changing a culture that dictates, “More care is better care.”

Submissions were judged by the Choosing Wisely Subcommittee, a panel of SHM members, under adult and pediatric categories. One grand prize winner and three honorable mentions were selected from these categories. The compendium includes these case studies along with additional exemplary submissions.

Choosing Wisely Case Study compendium now available

The Choosing Wisely Case Study Competition, hosted by SHM, sought submissions from hospitalists on innovative improvement initiatives implemented in their respective institutions. These initiatives reflect and promote movement toward reducing unnecessary medical tests and procedures and changing a culture that dictates, “More care is better care.”

Submissions were judged by the Choosing Wisely Subcommittee, a panel of SHM members, under adult and pediatric categories. One grand prize winner and three honorable mentions were selected from these categories. The compendium includes these case studies along with additional exemplary submissions.

New guide & modules on multimodal pain strategies for postoperative pain management

Pain management can pose multiple challenges in the acute care setting for hospitalists and front-line prescribers. While their first priority is to optimally manage pain in their patients, they also face the challenges of treating diverse patient populations, managing patient expectations, and considering how pain control and perceptions affect Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems scores. Furthermore, because of the ongoing opioid epidemic, prescribers must ensure that pain is managed responsibly and ethically.

To address these issues, SHM developed a guide to address how to work in an interdisciplinary team, identify impediments to implementation, and provide examples of appropriate pain management. In accompaniment with this Multimodal Pain Strategies Guide for Postoperative Pain Management, there are three modules presented by the authors which supplement the electronic guide.
